Summary Edit

The Pranava or "sacred syllable" of Hindu tradition - pronounced AUM. It was the first thing which God uttered at the beginning of the Universe, causing it to come into being. It is thought of as having three parts, with the following significations:

  • A - Creation, beginning, Brahma;
  • U - Sustaining, middle, Vishnu;
  • M - Destroying, end, Shiva.
